Note to recruiters

Note to recruiters: We are quite aware that recruiters, interviewers, VCs and other professionals generally perform a Google Search before they interview someone, take a pitch from someone, et cetera. Please keep in mind that not everything put on the Internet must align directly to one's future career and/or one's future product portfolio. Sometimes, people do put things on the Internet just because. Just because. It may be out of their personal interests, which may have nothing to do with their professional interests. Or it may be for some other reason. Recruiters seem to have this wrong-headed notion that if somebody is not signalling their interests in a certain area online, then that means that they are not interested in that area at all. It is worth pointing out that economics pretty much underlies the areas of marketing, strategy, operations and finance. And this blog is about economics. Why the World Didn't End Yesterday

From NASA, a Youtube video (title "Why the World Didn't End Yesterday") on the Mayan "End of the World" scheduled for today:

No meteorite will strike us today. No monster tsunami will destroy the earth, people. No hurricane will wipe out the planet. There are fewer things in heaven and earth than may be dreamt of in philosophy. The world won't end today. Of that, I am quite sure. Trust me. We will be back tomorrow.

Comment : Comment to Chris Langan, the "smartest man in the world"

Below are some comments I made to Chris Langan. Chris Langan who? Well, Chris Langan was dubbed "the smartest man in the world" in one Youtube video and "the smartest man in America" by Esquire magazine. He has an amazingly high IQ - estimated to be between 195 and 210.

For years, Langan has been developing a theory he calls the CTMU ('Cognitive-Theoretic Model of the Universe'). It took me less than three hours to find the mistakes in his theory, a mistake which basically dooms it. Here are the comments that I made on the blog 'Three Quarks Daily'. Note the times at which I made my comments. The first one came at 3:18:00 PM and the follow up came at 5:37:00 PM.

First of all, a note. None of us are bloggers per se. We are engaged in business research, software engineering, computer science & mathematics research and journalism among other things. Thus, what we are doing here is really presenting high quality information in the form of a blog. Anand Manikutty got his undergraduate degree in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, something for which he still gets ribbed. He has pursued graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, the Harvard Business School and Stanford University. He is a technology entrepreneur and inventor holding over 15 patents in computer science and technology. He has over 15 research papers in computer science and engineering. He has also contributed to a textbook on strategic management. He splits time between Monterey and the crazy, exciting San Francisco Bay Area. He is working on this column in collaboration with Prof. Krishnan Shankar. Krishnan Shankar (Ravi to friends) is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oklahoma. His professional trajectory started in Mumbai at Ruparel through Reed College in Portland, Oregon and the University of Maryland, College Park where he obtained his Ph.D under Karsten Grove in differential geometry. His latest creation is by far his best and most demanding: his daughter, Sophie Mallika, who renews his sense of the miraculous on a daily basis. Prof. Sankaran Manikutty was a Professor (with tenure) at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. His profession trajectory started in the Indian Railways where he worked for more than two decades. He obtained his Ph.D. in Strategy (an area that used to also be called Business Policy) at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. He joined as faculty at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and rose to the position of Professor. He is now retired from service. ~

What is "Ask the Delphic Oracle"?

"Ask the Delphic Oracle" is a blog created for a Science/Technology, Mathematics and Innovation column of the same name for the Times of India Group. (It is now a spin-off from the newspaper columns and, what's more, has survived the demise of the Indiatimes.com columns section itself. The themes of the blog are Science/Technology, Mathematics, Innovation and Economics with American Studies as a focus area.) The blog is maintained by Anuradha, Anand Manikutty in collaboration with Prof. Krishnan "Ravi" Shankar. All columnists and opinion writers have been taken off Indiatimes.com, and so we will no longer be running there. At the same time, this blog has taken a life of its own and besides, there are some loose ends to tie up, not the least of which is a summer puzzle contest we conducted in association with the Stanford Math Circle. So, posting on this blog will continue, and our association with the Stanford Math Circle will continue as well.

The theme of the blog is, as you know, science, mathematics and innovation, and so we post links to news stories on science, mathematics and innovation. We do love mathematics and so we also do another thing - we use mathematical principles whenever we can, wherever we can. Given that mathematics finds applicability virtually everywhere, we make posts on a variety of themes and subjects not directly related to mathematics.

So, enjoy the blog. Enjoy the math.
